How to post multiple photos on Instagram: the taps, and the settings nobody mentions

Tap Create, tap POST, then tap SELECT MULTIPLE and choose your files. Instagram calls the result a carousel, and the Help Center puts the limit at 20 photos and videos in one feed post. The whole post takes one location and one orientation, and you choose between a single caption and a caption for each photo.

A row of pastries lined up on the marble counter of a small bakery, with a phone on a tabletop tripod pointed at them, morning light coming through the shop window

The taps take under a minute. What catches people is everything the screen decides for you along the way: the crop applies to all of them, the first file becomes the cover, and one of the choices you make cannot be undone after you tap Share.

The steps on your phone

These are the steps as the Help Center lists them for Android and iPhone, checked on September 23, 2026.

  1. Tap Create at the top of your feed, or swipe right anywhere in Feed.
  2. Tap POST, then tap SELECT MULTIPLE.
  3. Pick the files from your library. To change how one of them is cropped, tap it and move it inside the frame. Tap Next in the top right.
  4. Choose a filter at the bottom to apply it to everything you selected, or tap one file to edit that one on its own.
  5. Reorder or drop a file. Tap and hold one, then drag it to a new spot, or drag it onto the bin to take it out. Tap Next.
  6. Choose Single caption or Multiple captions. The second one gives each photo or video its own text.
  7. Add the location and tag people. The location covers the post, and the tags go on each file: tap Tag People and swipe to the photo you want.
  8. Tap Share.

In the feed your post shows the first file with a row of dots under it, and people swipe to see the rest. On your profile you see that same opening file, with the carousel icon in the corner. If you only ever post one photo at a time, the single-photo flow and the Reel and Story flows sit side by side in our walkthrough on how to post on Instagram step by step.

Three settings that apply to the whole post

This is where a carousel stops behaving like eight separate posts.

  • Orientation. Square, portrait or landscape, and the Help Center is explicit that the one you pick affects every photo and video in the post. You cannot give one file portrait and the next one square. Pick the shape before you start dragging crops around, because changing it later re-crops all of them.
  • The filter. One tap at the bottom colours everything you selected. Tapping an individual file opens the editor for that file alone, which is how you fix the one photo shot under different light.
  • Likes and comments. They land on the post, not on the file someone was looking at. Instagram states this plainly: comments and likes appear on the entire post rather than on the individual photos and videos inside it. So a question in the comments never tells you which slide someone was on.

What you can change after you publish, and what you cannot

You can reorder the files, remove one, edit the caption or captions, edit the location and edit who is tagged. Open the three-dot menu on the right of the carousel, choose Edit, long press to drag a file to a new position, then choose Done.

One thing has no route back. Once the post is live you cannot add a new photo or video to it; the only way to add one is to delete the post and publish it again. That is worth knowing before you publish nine of the ten photos because the tenth is still exporting.

Photo size, so Instagram does not crop your work for you

Instagram uploads your photo at up to 1080 pixels wide. A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its original resolution as long as its aspect ratio sits between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which at 1080 wide means a height between 566 and 1440 pixels. Outside that range it gets cropped to fit. A photo narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged to 320, which is where blurry slides come from.

For a carousel this matters twice over, because the shape you choose applies to all of them. Export the set at the same size before you open Instagram and you skip the part where you fight the crop box eight times.

Letting other people add to your post

Instagram also lets you open a post up: you can allow other accounts to add photos and videos to your post, and nothing shows up until you approve it. For a small business this is the after-party of an event or a launch, where the people who were there add their own photos to yours instead of you chasing them in the direct messages.

The order is the post

The mechanics take a minute. Choosing what goes in and in what order takes the afternoon, and it is the part that decides whether anyone swipes. For a sense of size, of the 4,032 carousels created inside ZapPost between June 15 and August 31, 2026, 51% have exactly 4 slides and 87% have 6 or fewer.

Two habits that help, and these are our reading rather than anything Instagram publishes. Put the photo that makes someone stop in position one, because that is the only file that appears in the feed and on your profile grid. And treat the last slide as the one that asks for something, since the person who reached it read everything else. A before-and-after set works better split across the first and last positions than sitting next to each other halfway through, because the reader has to swipe to close the loop.

If the holdup is not the taps but having ten photos and no idea what to write under them, that is the part we built the product for, and it is also why scheduling posts in advance only helps once there is something to schedule. Our content tool for Instagram covers the same ground from the writing side.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos can go in one Instagram post?

Up to 20 photos and videos in a single feed post, which is the limit the Instagram Help Center gives for carousels. They can be any mix of the two.

Can I add a photo to a carousel I already published?

No. After you share it you can reorder files, remove them, and edit the caption, location and tags, but adding a new photo or video is not possible. The only route is to take the post down and upload the full set again.

Why can I not add music to my carousel?

It happens when one of the files is a video. Instagram lets you add music to a carousel of photos, and the option disappears once the post contains video.

Does each photo get its own caption?

It can. On the caption screen, Multiple captions gives every photo or video its own text, and Single caption puts one block under the whole post. The location, though, is one for the post.
