The content that actually gains followers

Posting a lot isn't enough if the content gives no reason to follow. See which formats attract real new followers and how to produce them without it becoming a burden.

There's a huge difference between content that entertains your existing followers and content that attracts new people. To gain followers, you need the second type: posts that reach people who don't follow you yet and give them a clear reason to hit "follow".

Not every post does that.

What makes someone follow a new profile

When a stranger sees your post, they follow if they think one of three things: "this helps me," "this represents me," or "I want to see more of this." A post meant to grow your account needs to hit at least one of these.

Golden rule: before posting, ask "would a stranger follow my profile after seeing this?". If the answer is no, the post serves the people who already follow you, not growth.

The formats that attract followers most

FormatWhy it helps you growReason to follow
"How to" carouselPeople save it and come back to it"This helps me"
Reels with a hookShown mostly to people who don't follow you"I want more"
Lists and common mistakesEasy to save and send to someone"This helps me"
Opinion / stanceDrives identification and conversation"This represents me"

Reels and Explore are where people who don't know you yet find you. In the ranking explainer Instagram head Adam Mosseri published in 2023, most of what people see in those two places comes from accounts they don't follow.

Saveable content is content that grows

In the same explainer, Instagram says the actions it tries hardest to predict in Explore are likes, saves and shares. A guide someone keeps for later, or sends to a friend, counts toward the last two. That's why it pays to write guides, lists and step-by-steps with the person who'll want to keep them in mind.

You can produce all four formats without appearing on camera: hands at work, materials, results and words you wrote yourself. The article on posting on Instagram without showing your face shows what replaces your face in each type of post.

How to tell if a post brought you followers

With a public account, open the post on your profile and tap View Insights. The Instagram Help Center lists what shows up there: views, interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares) and profile activity, which counts the actions people take on your profile after engaging with the post. Compare the profile activity of your growth posts with the rest. When one stands out, see what to do after a post does well.

The balance between growing and nurturing

You don't need every post to be for growth. The ideal is to balance: most focused on attracting new followers (useful, saveable, high reach), and a portion on nurturing and converting existing ones. If your profile is just starting, the guide to your first 1000 followers covers what changes in that phase.

The real challenge: producing all this

Knowing what to post is half the battle. The other half is being able to produce these formats week after week. A good educational carousel takes work. A Reels script with a strong hook takes time. Those who have content ready for their own niche produce in a fraction of the time, and manage to keep the volume growth requires.

Frequently asked questions

Which format grows faster: Reels or carousel?

We didn't find a public study comparing the two on follower gains. What Instagram says is that most of what people see in Reels comes from accounts they don't follow, so Reels is the format that reaches the most new people. Carousels are what people save to check later. Use both every week.

How often should I post "growth" content?

Most of your posts should have the potential to attract new followers. Reserve a fraction to nurture and convert existing ones. Balance matters, but growing means prioritizing reach.

Does viral content gain real followers?

Going viral brings reach, but it only turns into followers if the profile has a clear identity and more useful posts on the same subject. People who arrive through a viral post and find nothing similar on the profile visit and leave.
