On 21 July 2026 Instagram turned on the option to replace the audio on a feed post or carousel that is already published. The post stays the same, with the likes, comments, shares and reach it already had. Only the song changes. The news was reported by Tech Times and PetaPixel.

What changed
Until now the audio came in with the post and stayed there for good. If the track you picked left the catalogue, if the sound was pulled for copyright, or if you simply changed your mind, the only way out was to delete the post and upload it again. Anyone who did that lost everything the first version had built up.
There is a button for swapping the track now, and you can change it as many times as you want. According to PetaPixel, you can also add music to a post that went up with no audio at all.
| Before July 2026 | Now |
|---|---|
| Take it down and upload the whole thing again | Edit the post that is already live |
| Likes and comments back to zero | Likes and comments stay put |
| A silent post stayed silent | You can add audio later |
How to swap it on your phone
In the app, the path is short:
- Open the post you want to change.
- Tap the menu in the top right corner.
- Choose Edit.
- Look for the option to replace the audio and pick the new song.
The rollout was global, according to Campaign Middle East, but it reached accounts gradually, so the option may not have shown up in yours yet. If you do not see it, update the app from the store and check again in a few days.
What this changes if you run a small business
When you look after your own profile between one client and the next, you usually have a handful of posts that keep bringing people in months after you published them. The carousel that explains what you do, the before and after photo, the post people still send to a friend on WhatsApp.
Those are exactly the posts you would never delete, even with the wrong song on them. Now you can fix their audio without risking what they have already built.
A common case: you used a track that was later muted for copyright, and anyone opening the post today finds an audio unavailable notice. We checked the path for this case in the Instagram Help Center on 18 September 2026: tap Audio unavailable, then Replace audio. The new track comes from Instagram's licensed audio library, and the Help Center notes that a muted track can only be replaced once.
What to do this week
- Open your most viewed posts and listen to each one. You will find out quickly which are silent or carrying a removed music notice.
- Start with the ones still bringing people in. The older post that keeps showing up to people who do not follow you is the one most worth fixing.
- Check what you posted without any sound. A carousel published in a hurry often ends up silent, and it can have a song now.
What stays the same
It helps to know what this does not do, so you do not spend the week waiting for something that is not coming:
- Replacing the audio does not get the post in front of more people. Jimmy O'Keefe, who heads creator product marketing at Instagram, said the swap brings no algorithmic boost, according to Tech Times and PetaPixel.
- The announcement does not mention Reels. According to Tech Times, the swap covers feed posts, photo or video, and carousels.
- The post does not jump back to the top of anyone's feed. It stays on the date you published it.
If what you want is to reach new people, publishing regularly is still the way there. It is worth reading the change to the repost rule, which touches exactly who shows up in recommendations, and what makes someone tap follow.
One less decision when you publish
Being able to fix the audio later takes some weight off publishing. You stop freezing over the choice of song, post, and adjust it afterwards if you want. What tends to hold people up is the step before that, deciding what to say and putting the post together. On that, have a look at how to create Instagram content with AI.
ZapPost delivers the carousel, the Reels script and the caption ready to go. No writing prompts, no Canva, no new tool to learn. You review and publish.
Frequently asked questions
Does replacing the audio wipe the likes and comments?
No. According to the launch reports, the post holds on to everything it had gathered, and the only thing that changes is the soundtrack.
Can I replace the audio on a Reel as well?
The announcement does not mention Reels. It talks about feed posts, photo or video, and carousels.
Does swapping the song push the post to more people?
Instagram said it does not, through Jimmy O'Keefe. The post carries on with the same performance as before, and the swap on its own is no shortcut to more reach.
Can I add music to a post I published with no sound?
According to PetaPixel, yes. A post that went up without music can get a track through the edit screen, and you can still change your mind later.
